Have You Searched Online Only To Find The Lack Of Reggae Bass Resources?
The online resources available for reggae music are surprisingly limited, making it challenging for enthusiasts and newcomers alike to explore the genre fully. Despite its rich history and cultural significance, many websites lack authentic and accurate educational content that could help promote a deeper understanding of reggae. This scarcity not only hinders appreciation of the genre but also restricts the sharing of its vibrant stories and influences.
Although reggae is one of the most popular styles and over the years has influenced so much music around the world. The art to playing it authentically has remained a mystery. Yes... you can find resources on Bob Marley's music but if you want to dig a little deeper, it can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
From Touring Bassist To Online Educator
-
In 2020, the world came to a standstill, and as a full-time musician, I found myself confined at home with little to occupy my time. Out of sheer boredom, I began creating videos and sharing them on Facebook. The response was overwhelmingly positive, prompting me to upload one of those videos to YouTube. To my surprise, the most frequent comment I received was, “Where’s the tabs, dude? Can we get the tabs?”
This led me to explore YouTube further, where I discovered a handful of instructors teaching reggae, but unfortunately, 99% of the information provided was inaccurate.
-
With over 30 years of experience as a touring bassist alongside some of Jamaica's most renowned reggae artists, and having taught at various schools and colleges, I decided to merge the insights I gained from performing with these artists and my teaching expertise and explore teaching reggae bass online. To my delight, my unique teaching style has been embraced as a refreshing alternative to the existing bass tutorials available online.Â

And this is why I created my amazing course: '' Reggae Bass Decoded"
Here's an image of my Grammy Award and Nomination.
How Reggae Bass Decoded will Transform Your Playing From Guessing To Knowing
1
Unlock Reggae Rhythm Mastery
2
Master Your Plucking Technique
3
Develop Perfect Ear for Reggae Bass
Upon completing this course, you'll start to notice the similarities in many reggae bass patterns. You'll also develop the ability to hear the bass rhythm in recordings. As your ear training progresses, you'll eventually be able to pick out bass lines from songs without relying on tabs.
4
Transform Your Tab Reading with Rhythm
Since tabs do not convey rhythm or note duration, grasping the rhythms presented in this course will enhance your tab reading skills and provide greater clarity. By studying these rhythms, you will work towards the ultimate goal of playing without the need for tabs.
Here's what you get in Reggae Bass Decoded
Lesson 1 - Open Strings And Right Hand Technique
In Lesson 1, we dive into creating good habits with our plucking hand. Right off the bat we start to create some reggae grooves using open strings.
Lesson 2 - Introducing The Left Hand and Basic Reggae Rhythms
In Lesson 2 we get the fretting hand into action and introduce our 8th note rhythm pattern.
Lesson 3 - Major and Minor Triads
A common pattern found in reggae bass lines is the three note pattern called the triad. Lesson 3 introduces the two main triad patterns commonly found in Reggae Bass while building on the rhythms found in the previous lessons.
Lesson 4 - Adding Space
In Lesson 4 we will get into the most rhythm of all... Space how and why the notes you don't play are as important as the notes you do play.
Lesson 5 - Introduction to 16th Note Rhythms
The 16th note rhythm is one of reggae's most popular rhythms. 16th notes come in many disguises therefore I introduce the most basic form and then we start to investigate the variations of 16th notes over the next few lessons.
Lesson 6 - Additional 16th Note Rhythms
Reading music is not essential for playing bass BUT... explaining the rhythms is difficult if the teacher has no knowledge of music reading. In this lesson I introduce you to a concept I call the 3 Wailers. Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.Â
Lesson 7 - Introducing The 5th
The most popular songs are made up of the 2 note pattern Root and 5th. If you have been working through each lesson you will know exactly what a 5th means. I also explain how to make a Reggae bass line SWING.
Lesson 8 - The Flabba Holt Groove
This is a rhythm made famous by Flabba Holt as it was a rhythm he played a lot and became a part of his identity. I used the same rhythm for a song I produced and played bass on for Jamaican Band Morgan Heritage. This song became the title track of their album Strictly Roots which went on to win a GRAMMY.Â
Lesson 9 - The Farrari Rhythm
In lesson 9 we look at the last of the 16th note combinations. A rhythm I call the Farrari.Â
Â
Lesson 10 - Putting it all together
Lesson 10 is your chance to put all the rhythms and concepts together in one exercise.

"I went through the whole course again and I know that you probably want to hear some criticism or things to improve on but I think is just great as it is.I can tell you put so much thought into this. The truth is that this is exactly what I needed when I first picked up the bass. You cover rhythm basic music theory and the riddim up keeps things even more fun and challenging throughout the course. I really like the format of video, PDF and backing tracks. Its easy to learn first from the video and then adventure alone with the pdf and the backing tracks. I'm sure this course will be a success when its out and many people will benefit from it. Your biggest fan."
Mia
"Don, hopefully you can tell that I really enjoy my classes with you. Not only are your lessons as interesting and enjoyable as your YouTube videos but based on our initial discussion I was impressed to have left the first class with a decent handle on Crazy Baldhead. Thanks for tailoring the classes to fit my needs. And the files you give me at the end of each class really help with my independent practice. I especially like the Reggae Rhythm course. It’s often hard for me to practice the scales and triads because I really just want to play along to the reggae I’ve enjoyed over the years. Those backing tracks turn practice sessions into actually playing music. The lessons and the course are a great combo."

Fantastic course Don, thanks! It's really useful - I'm hoping you'll do a follow on course in the future? Thanks Don - Alex Â
Riddum Up 7 is exposing some weaknesses in my technique. It's a great exercise. The Doogie is tough for me to maintain in time but I will keep working at it -Edward
Coming together good now. Great backing tracks and I'm making improvements in the feel. This fits in nice with your Flabba video you made a while ago where you did Police In Helicopter and I'm Still Dancing. Confident to move on to the 16th Notes and rotate lesson 4-6 for a bit. Bring it on - Dereck
thank you so much for the good work you created. I was after beginner basics for reggae and you got me hooked! All along I had difficulties counting beats out. Your fundamental approch helped straight away. Looking forward to the next course - Walter
